Why dog ignores you when you call the it

Have you ever looked in your bank account and saw you have an overdraft? You somehow spent more money than you had. You didn’t even realize you had done this and now you need to somehow fix the over draft.

I bet you are thinking what does my bank account have to do with dog training? Make sure to keep reading and you will find out.

One of the biggest reasons dogs are lost or killed is because they do not come when called. You yell and yell and yell their name for them to only keep running away. They act like they don’t even hear you. The more times you yell their name the farther in debt you go. You are teaching your dog to “go away” when you say their cue to come. We don’t mean for that happen but we unintentionally teach our dog’s that the cue to come to you means leave.

Think about this; what if every time you said your dog’s cue to come you gave them a treat or you put a dollar in your bank account. You would be building so much value for their cue that in that moment when you need them to come to you they don’t hesitate. Like your bank account if you put a dollar in there every week you won’t get an overdraft because you have extra money in it.

Many time’s I see people saying their dog’s cue to come to them for EVERYTHING. The dog starts to just ignore it. They start over drafting their dog’s cue, so when they really need their dog to stop and come to them the dog just keeps on going in the opposite direction.

Here are a few tips to keep your dog’s recall cue from over drafting:

  1. Pick a special word for their cue to come to you.  I like “that’ll do” I do not use it for any other skills. You can also use a whistle.
  2. Once you have the cue picked then every single time you say that cue and the dog turns and comes to you reward them with something AWESOME! Not just a good dog. Because a good dog is like a penny in the account compared to chicken or a dollar.
  3. If you are set on using your dog’s name as the cue to come I would be making sure that I either don’t say it all the time or I have lots of dollars to put in the account.
  4. One last tip is to create a chase drive. What I mean is that when a squirrel runs past your dog and you cue “come” you better be moving the other way to get your dog to chase you or have a lot of dollars in your account so the squirrel does not create an overdraft.

Your dog will not depend on treats to come to you. With time you will have so much value built up in many different situations that your dog will not leave you with an overdraft.
